They say history is stranger than fiction, and nowhere is that more true that in the case of Agatha Christie. She may be one of the most prolific authors in history, but did you know there’s a real-life Agatha Christie mystery that is (in my opinion) far more fascinating than any she penned? With Death on the Nile scheduled to release in 2022, you might be interested to know more about the woman behind the story.
You see, on a cold winter’s night back in 1926 – when she was already a moderately successful author – Agatha Christie went missing.
The ensuing investigation was one of the first modern, worldwide media frenzies. Everybody got involved. Even Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, the inimitable Sherlock Holmes author, bent his considerable brainpower towards solving the case!
For ten full days, Christie seemed to have vanished. And then she returned…without explaining where she was, or what happened during that time.
It was a mystery she took to her grave. To this day, nobody knows what happened to Agatha Christie when she disappeared in 1926, though there have been countless stories fictionalizing the tale.
If you’re interested in reading a fun, historical fiction version of Agatha’s disappearance, I lovedThe Mystery of Mrs. Christie by Marie Benedict.
Now, perhaps the title of this post is a tad unfair. Death on the Nile starring Gal Gadot hasn’t been released yet, so I can’t definitively say Christie’s real-life mystery is 100x more interesting. But I have the read the book, and I’ve also read about Mrs. Christie’s disappearance…
If you have to choose between the two, I’d suggest The Mystery of Mrs. Christie. But feel free to check out both!
