Research shows that the average person needs to encounter a new word eight times before reliably recalling it. How you get those impressions is up to you. Personally, I'd rather kick back with a good story than bang my head against the memorization wall.
Immersion is the fastest way to learn a foreign language, and it's the fastest way to improve your English vocabulary. Why? Because immersion = stories. This is true whether English is your first, second, or seventh language.
